Cervical sprains and strains are one of the most common diagnoses that chiropractors give. Any stretch to ligaments (sprain) or muscle (strain) can cause significant pain and lack of mobility. Conservative treatment restores proper function, mobility, and health to the tissue by restoring blood flow, increasing strength, reducing inflammation, and restoring proper alignment. There are three grades of each (1,2,3). Grade 1 is mild and may include some swelling, but mainly involves pain/discomfort with stretching of the tissue. Grade 2 involves some swelling, possible bruising, and significant pain with stretching of the tissue. Grade 3 involves tearing of the tissue with swelling, bruising, and lack of function.
